From the 14th to the 19th of June 2005, the 3rd Triennial of Photography Hamburg took place with great success. About 260,000 guests (an increase of about 30 %) visited the exhibitions in ten museums and cultural institutions, numerous art galleries, art societies and cultural institutions, but also in bookshops, banks, and shopping centres in and around Hamburg. Offering 114 exhibitions of 83 organizations, a fair and a charity auction, conferences and photo conventions, symposia and lectures, workshops, and other events, the triennial has turned into the biggest festival of photography in Germany.
With the motto "Archives of the Present", the festival program comprised exhibitions of national and international artists showing historical as well as contemporary photography. Furthermore, both artists and scientists were given a platform for discussions.
The foundation of the Haus der Photographie (House of Photography) at the Deichtorhallen in April 2005 contributed to dealing with the concept of "archives", as it incorporated two important collections - the collection of the magazine Der Spiegel and one of the private collector F.C. Gundlach - at the time of the triennial, of which two exhibitions for the festival were assembled.
Besides an extract from the new collections on the opening of the Haus der Photographie, the Deichtorhallen presented the first retrospective of one of the most famous photographers of the last century, Martin Munkácsi. Despite the scarcity of suitable material, the Haus der Photographie succeeded in offering an exhibition, which paid tribute to the work of Munkácsi, a native Hungarian, who decisively influenced press photography in Berlin of the 1920's and who revolutionized fashion photography in the USA in the 1940's
The presentation of important press photographers continued with the exhibition "Robert Capa - Faces of History" at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. Producing a work of remarkable range, Robert Capa, also a native Hungarian and an outstanding war photographer took photographs of five wars on three continents as well as pictures of a number of famous contemporaries.
The Altonaer Museum concluded the set of press photographers with the exhibition "Volker Hinz: 24 hours 7 days". On the occasion of the Triennial of Photography, the museum showed for the first time a selection of the photographs that Hinz had taken in thirty years for the magazine stern. His archives comprise reports in colour as well as his famous portraits in black and white and his decisive social studies which justify his excellent reputation as photographer.
As Hamburg is renowned as a centre for media, the Triennial of Photography was likely to bring press and advertising photography into focus. Thus a considerable number of Hamburg's photographers took part in the triennial of 2005, i.e. Hans Hansen, Andreas Herzau, Enver Hirsch, Roswitha Hecke, Felix Borkenau, Corinna Holthusen, Markus Dorfmüller, Jochen Lempert.
Nonetheless, the festival program was of great diversity. The Hamburger Kunsthalle presented three photographic exhibitions - "Parklandschaften" by Albert Renger-Patzsch showing photographs, which had been taken on behalf of the banker's family Warburg in 1928; "Begegnungen mit Guerica" by Fritz Fenzl, a former photographer for the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and "Die Begierde im Blick", an extensive show of surrealistic photography. The Museum der Arbeit presented "Rauchzeichen", an exhibition with photographs from the collection Reemtsma. Furthermore, the Kunstverein Hamburg showed "Mark Lewis and Louise Lawler", the Kunsthaus participated with "Bilder verkehren", and the Helms-Museum exhibited "Harburg in alten Fotografien".
Time and again, the cooperation with numerous art galleries in and around Hamburg was especially pleasant, as they suited their program to the Triennial of Photography. Whereas some galleries enlarged their offer of photographs, both young and established photo galleries showed a variety of high-quality photo art.
Finally, worth mentioning is the exhibition "entdecken - inszenieren - dokumentieren" at the northern Deichtorhalle. More than 300 students of 13 schools in Hamburg - primary, secondary, commercial, and grammar schools - participated in a photo competition. 50 photographs, which had been selected by a professional jury, were exhibited during the triennial.
