Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige: Memory Box

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary edition, which takes place from September 29 to October 8, 2022, the Filmfest Hamburg curates In the Darkroom of Memories, a program highlighting the importance of photographic memories for future generations with screenings of three films.

In the film Memory Box by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, teenage Alex finds a treasure chest of photos and records of her mother, who fled Lebanon for Montreal as a teenager. With this, the daughter enters into a unique dialogue with her mother’s photographic self of the same age, re-exploring the relationship between the two.
