Verdiana Albano
i ain’t from no east coast
Verdiana Albano’s "i ain’t from no east coast" explores the complex dynamics of family, individuality, and identity, examining the dreams and longings passed down through generations that arise from labor migration.
Albano consciously transcends the boundaries between documentation and staging to explore questions of belonging and identity. She works with her family’s archive, researches in institutions such as DOMiD (Documentation Centre and Museum of Migration in Germany), and creates new narratives. In doing so, she incorporates her older brother, self-portraits, and authentic locations like the DDR-Alltagsmuseum Malchow, the DDR Museum Berlin, and former VEB factories. Additionally, she has researched philosophical and cultural discussions and treatises on Afro-German identities. This Afro-German narrative navigates through fragmentation, decisions, stereotypes, and the opportunities of a constantly changing society.
